Every major route between Asia and Europe transits through the Gulf. The three hubs — Dubai International, Hamad International, and Abu Dhabi International — process over 200 million passengers annually. The differences between them matter less for transit than their respective airlines do.
DXB: volume is the feature
Dubai International handles more international passengers than any airport on earth. Terminal 3, exclusive to Emirates, is a city masquerading as a transit hub. The advantage is frequency: Emirates operates 6-8 daily flights on major routes, giving you far more rebooking options when things go wrong. The downside: the sheer scale means it takes 25 minutes minimum to walk from one end of Concourse B to the far gates, even with travelators.
DOH: the premium play
Hamad International is smaller (40 million vs 87 million passengers) and deliberately premium. Qatar Airways uses it as a product showcase: the Al Mourjan business lounge is 10,000 square metres with private nap rooms and a medical centre. Connection times are tighter — the airport is designed for efficient transfers. If you are flying business class, Doha is the best ground experience in the region.
AUH: the quiet option
Abu Dhabi's new Midfield Terminal (Terminal A) opened in 2023 and the airport now has capacity it has not yet filled. Etihad operates fewer frequencies than Emirates or Qatar but the airport experience is striking in its absence of crowds. Immigration takes 3 minutes instead of 30. If you are transiting through the Gulf at peak season (December, January), AUH is the stealth winner — the empty terminal is a genuine advantage.
What to actually base your choice on
The airport matters for transit experience. But the airline determines the schedule, the seat, and the rebooking options. Emirates wins on frequency, Qatar on service, Etihad on price on certain routes. Check the departure time, not the airport name. TravelsOTA searches all three hubs simultaneously through Travelport NDC+GDS integration. You see the full market, not just one airline's inventory.
